Star Wars Jedi Survivor (Playstation 4) – Ubernerd’s Gaming Backlog Review

Anyone who knows me will tell you my number one fandom has always been, and will always be, Star Wars. I’ve loved it since I was a kid, and that passion has never faded. Sure, I don’t enjoy everything under the Star Wars banner, but I appreciate a lot of it. I defended the prequels when it was cool to hate them. And I genuinely enjoyed shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, flaws and all.

One corner of Star Wars that has always brought me joy, though, is the video games. I have fond memories of playing the Super Star Wars trilogy on the Super Nintendo and Dark Forces on PC. I even saved up an entire summer for a Nintendo 64 just to play Star Wars Episode I: Racer (and yes, GoldenEye 007 too).

While there aren’t as many Star Wars games today as in the past, the ones we’ve gotten have been strong. Especially the Star Wars Jedi series. Both Fallen Order and its sequel, Jedi: Survivor, follow the adventures of Cal Kestis, a survivor of Order 66, navigating what it means to be a Jedi in the dark rise of the Empire.

The story in Jedi: Survivor is fascinating and feels impactful, like Star Wars Rebels, its events ripple into other parts of the galaxy. The gameplay? Smooth, challenging, and immersive. This isn’t just a button-masher; you’ll earn your mastery of Force powers, lightsaber combat, and techniques as you progress. Better yet, the system lets you personalize how you fight, making every encounter feel like your Jedi journey. Add in customization for Cal, his lightsaber, and his trusty droid BD-1, and it’s an experience that nails the fantasy of being a Jedi.

What I Loved

  • The story – Epic twists, turns, and surprises that feel authentically Star Wars.
  • Gameplay depth – From new Force powers to fresh lightsaber stances (the cross-guard stance quickly became a favorite).
  • Team-up abilities – Fighting alongside allies was a blast and added variety to encounters.
  • So much to do – The game is packed with content. At times, it’s overwhelming, but it’s mostly optional and secondary to the story.

What I Didn’t Love

  • The PS4 version – This game was clearly designed for next-gen consoles. On PS4, it’s buggy, occasionally frustrating, and visually underwhelming.
  • Performance issues – While I’m glad it’s playable on older hardware, I strongly recommend playing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC if possible.

Final Thoughts

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor continues what Fallen Order started and delivers one of the best Star Wars gaming experiences to date. From its gripping story to its finely tuned combat system, this is a must-play for Star Wars fans.

If you only have access to PS4, it’s still worth experiencing, but expect technical hiccups. If you have a newer console or PC, that’s the way to play.

Backlog Status: ✅ Completed
Would I recommend? Yes, for Star Wars fans, action-adventure gamers, and anyone who’s ever dreamed of being a Jedi. If you have a PS5, an Xbox Series X|S, or an awesome PC, do not play the PS4 version.
