Nintendo releasing a new console is always a big deal. It’s more than just hardware; it marks the start of a new era in gaming.
Recently, Ray the Arcade Guy dropped a video sharing his thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2 (and you should totally check it out if you haven’t). I loved hearing his perspective, but now with the Nintendo Switch 2 only a few days away (as of the writing of this post), I want to share my own reasons for getting hyped and why I think this launch might be one of Nintendo’s most exciting yet.
Here are five reasons I’m all in on the Switch 2. If you’re excited too, hit the comments and let’s talk games.
🔊 1. Better Communication = Better Connections
Let’s be honest: Nintendo’s online communication tools have always been a bit clunky.
That’s finally changing. With the Switch 2, we’re getting:
- An optional add-on camera lets you video chat with friends while gaming, so you can actually see them as you play together. Even cooler, there’s a feature that lets you watch what they’re playing in real time, adding a whole new layer of connection.
Sure, Discord still reigns supreme, but having these tools baked into the console is a huge win for the community.
🤝 2. Game Sharing Is Back (and Better)
Remember the DS days when you could share a game with a friend who didn’t own it? That beloved feature is returning, and it’s cross-compatible with the original Switch!
Now you can:
- Play select games with friends who don’t own them
- Game share with people still using the first-gen Switch
This is a seriously thoughtful touch from Nintendo.
🖱️ 3. Mouse Controls = Console Game Changer
I’ve always been more of a console gamer, but the Switch 2 is bridging the gap in a cool way.
The Joy-Cons can now function as mouse controllers. That opens the door for genres that have long been PC-only, like:
- Point-and-click adventures (Please bring back Strong Bad’s Cool game for Attractive People)
- Real-time strategy games
- Classic PC RPGs
Launch title Drag X Drive shows off the feature well. Even if the game itself isn’t my jam, the tech behind it has huge potential.
🔁 4. Backwards Compatibility… with Upgrades
Backwards compatibility used to be rare. Now it’s expected, and Nintendo is doing more than just allowing older games to run.
They’re enhancing them:
- Visual upgrades for free
- New DLC campaigns for some games (like Kirby and the Forgotten Land)
- New modes for older games (Super Mario Party Jamboree)
While I have mixed feelings about the price tags on some of these upgrades, I appreciate that Nintendo’s making the effort.
🎮 5. Launch Games That Actually Deliver
Let’s be real, games sell systems. And the Switch 2 has an impressive launch library. My top picks:
🍌 Donkey Kong Bananza
A destructible 3D platformer? YES. You can:
- Rip up the environment
- Hurl boulders
- Burrow underground
This is the most excited I’ve been for a DK game, ever.
🏁 Mario Kart World
Open-world Mario Kart? That’s a dream come true.
Not just a party game anymore:
- Drive for fun
- Explore gorgeous landscapes
- Play solo and with friends
This game alone might sell the system for me.
⚔️ Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
This game feels a bit overlooked, but I’m really excited about it. If you’ve played Dynasty Warriors, you understand the thrill of smashing through waves of enemies. It’s chaotic fun with a Zelda twist. Other than the fact that Age of Imprisonment is set during (or more accurately, before) the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, we don’t have much information about this game or its new features. However, if it is anything like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, it should be great.
There are many other games I’m excited about for the Switch 2, but to keep this post brief, I will focus on just these three for now. Rest assured, I will cover more in a future Ubernerd Gaming Backlog Review.
