If adventure has a name, it has to be… the cliffhanger Edward Randy!

Hey Arcaders!

We’ve made it to 1990!

What if you wanted to make an Indiana Jones game, but can’t get the license- what to do?  Data East was so good at this- take the best scenes from a movie, and make levels around them to play. It has been a very successful formula for the company for a few years now. But this game- takes it to the next level! Let’s join the Adventures of Edward Randy!

1930s, Europe. In that country, where the feared colonel known as the “Supreme Demon” resides, research into weapons of mass destruction is underway in secret. An old scientist, who learned the truth about his research, feared that the colonel would misuse it, and took away the “Prism”, the stone that played the central role in his research, and entrusted it to his granddaughter Charlotte.

On September 14th, 193X, Charlotte was being chased by the colonel and a certain national army who were relentlessly tracking Prism’s whereabouts. She is accidentally saved by Edward Randy, an adventurer, and thus begins the fight for the Prism. This game is a graphic and sound tour de force- the object layers and rotation were on par with other companies at the time- but it’s the feel of being in a 80s adventure movie is what puts this one over the top for me!

What you see is a mockup- as this game wasn’t released in the US. The only released in Japan- which is a shame, as this is a great game! Let’s check out the gameplay!

Unfortunately, due to the horsepower behind the special effects, the title fell into obscurity, because none of the home consoles at the time could remotely do it justice.

Edward Randy was scheduled to be ported to the Saturn by Xing, whose Arcade Gears series included several ports of older arcade games, like Taito’s Pu·Li·Ru·La and Irem’s X-Multiply, although plans fell through and nothing came of it. It was also announced for ports to European computers like the ZX Spectrum, although no solid evidence of their existence was ever released. Although an English language ROM of the arcade version exists, it seems to have only been released in Japan.

So, like the Ark of the Covenant- it was sealed in a crate, and put in a giant warehouse, never to be seen again.

Until emulation that is!

Now everyone can enjoy this amazing game!

Hopefully- good old Johnny Turbo bring this great game to modern systems soon!

Keep Playin’ Like It’s 1981!
