RayGunn Visits The Vector Volcano Classic Arcade In Bend, Oregon!

Hey Arcaders!

My wife’s family were planning a huge reunion for the beginning of August In Oregon. In doing research on Sunriver and it’s surrounding areas I found out that they had an arcade in Bend, about 25 miles from where I was! Not just any redemption style with new kiddie games and a Galaga, But a REAL WORKING classic video arcade!  And on August 4th, I had the opportunity to go to Bend (A beautiful town, by the way) and visit The Vector Volcano.  And it was awesome! The owners, Brett and Danielle were very nice and they were excited to see all the old Arcaders in and enjoying their favorites and the young Arcaders playing games that were popular long before they were born! The place was packed when I was in, and whole families were having a great time (even some of mine!)

The room is styled like an arcade right out of the early 80s! The attention to detail was amazing! The game selection would keep anyone busy for a very long time! Brett has been collecting since 1996, and it shows! Every screen clean, crisp, and vibrant, and the cabinets and their artwork have held up well- they look almost new! And all the games were working great! What I liked the most was his selection of the lesser known games- watch the video below and you will catch glimpses of Tapper, Cheyenne, Tutankham, Bubbles, Popeye, Zookeeper, and more! The even had a jukebox that played 45s in the back!

Here’s a list of the games they had while I was there-

Asteroids, Bubbles, Burgertime, Centipede, Defender, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Dragon’s Lair, Galaga, Gorf, Journey, Joust, Kick, Marble Madness, Mario Bros., Millipede, Missile Command, Mortal Kombat 2, Pac-Man, Popeye, Q*bert, Qix, Rampart, Robotron: 2084, Star Wars, Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting, Tapper, Tempest, Tron, Tutankham, Warlords cocktail, Zookeeper, 4 slot Neo Geo (Metal Slug 1, Puzzle Bobble, Windjammers, League Bowling)

Black Knight, Centaur, Fathom, Fireball 2, Firepower, Flash Gordon, Gorgar, Medusa, Space Invaders

The best part is THEY ARE ALL ON FREE PLAY!

You can buy an hour pass, or an all day wristband!

The Video Game Challenge Pilot Episode 1983!

vid ch

I couldn’t wait to post this when I found it! This is a pilot for a show called The Video Game Challenge. It would had come out about the same time as Starcade was just getting syndicated on TBS in 1983. The beginning of the program was also shown during the Ben Gold interview in the movie Chasing Ghosts (RELEASE IT ON DVD ALREADY!)  What makes this episode even more special is that Ben Gold ( Champion Arcade game player on Stargate, Centipede,  and Millipede)  and Eric Ginner ( Champion Arcade game player on Moon Patrol, Centipede and Crystal Castles) Are on to compete on Millipede! Ben Gold wins and gets the Millipede machine and still has it  (or at least up to filming Chasing Ghosts.)  Its a three parter, but very informative! It’s not just game competition, but top 10 games lists, previews of upcoming games, and reviews, (Teen idol Bobby Sherman is the  host, and “The Real Don Steele” as play by play announcer!)  Enjoy!

This video is from Ben Gold’s channel over on Youtube. Be sure to go over and check out his win on “Thats Incredible”.

Great stuff, man!

We here at the Arcade Archives admire your amazing high scores and everyone who can play at that level as well!
