Nintendo’s 130th Birthday

For a company that started out making simple playing cards to creating games that helped shaped the childhood of many Arcaders/Gamers, Nintendo has truly come a long way.

Happy 130th Birthday Nintendo!

The Gamesters Present: SmashTalk Premier Episode

Smashtalk Logo

SmashTalk is a new spin off series that will have us Gamesters (plus special guests) playing Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. While we do we will be cracking jokes, telling information about specific characters, and much more. This episode however will be a little different though. Because for our inaugural episode we thought that it would share our thoughts about the game in general and we even have our first guests Creator of The Arcade Archives himself RayGunn and Sir Luna. Before I end this introduction I would like to apologies for it being very, very late. Because of holidays, life getting in  the way, and because this video was a very ambitious undertaking, editing this video took longer than we were anticipating. But we hope that you will enjoy us anyways and please feel free to comment below.

Resident Evil Bio-hazard Inspired Acrylic Earrings By Fabrication Unlimited

wpid-20141106_133108.jpg

Fabrication Unlimited is an awesome store on Etsy that I found. They have awesome acrylic jewelry. I also love that their products come packaged in boxes with their company name on it. It shows they really care about their product brand.

wpid-20141106_133129.jpg

Now lets talk about these bad ass earrings shall we! I mean just look at these awesome bio hazard earrings. I love the vivid color of the red. It really makes them stand out. I also love that even though they are good size earrings they aren’t heavy! That is a problem I have with earrings all the time is the weight of them. They are also one piece of laser cut acrylic. These are a great addition to your wardrobe and a must have.

wpid-20141106_133156.jpg

The card that the earrings arrive on have a message from the store owners thanking you for your purchase which I think is awesome! They also have a ton of awesome items available for what ever your geeky little heart desires. They also offer special orders! With the holidays quickly approaching I defiantly suggest this store as a win for that special someone in your life! I know I saw a couple items I need to order to help finish my shopping list!

Top Five Underrated Video Game Characters

Ask any non-gamer and they will tell you who Mario is and what he does. Or ask anyone who Sonic the Hedgehog is and most people will probably answer “isn’t that the blue thing with the red shoes?” But just like any medium there are some characters that only the true hardcore gamers will only be aware of. The following is a list of characters that I believe are totally underutilized and could be on the same level as Mario or Sonic but for some reason or another it hasn’t happened.

Jak and Daxter

Jak and Daxter

Sony wanted to have a new mascot for their new Playstation 2 since they lost Crash Bandicoot. So they decided to create several games and see what stuck. One of the first was Jak and Daxter created by Naughty Dog, who also created Crash and would go on to create Uncharted. This game alone was reason enough to own a Playstation 2 with a mix of platforming, adventure, and even third person shooter. The trilogy  is one of the best stories in gaming. Starting with the more kid friendly game and then going to a darker story line in the other adventures. There is also three spin-off games one for the PS2 Jak X: Combat Racing and the others for PSP Daxter and Jak and Daxter the Lost Frontier. Jak X: Combat Racing was one of my favorite kart racing games besides Mario Kart. With an unprecedented car customizing system that made the game more challenging. Their character dynamic worked really well for the games with Jak being the straight man and Daxter being the mouth. Jak started off in the first game as the quote cliché mute protagonist but in the games following started talking. Daxter being the comedy relief making wise cracks to you and other characters as well as serving as  a more tolerable Navi (from The Legend of Zelda) type character reminding the player about missions and objectives you needed to do in the game. The sad part is that it seems once Sony got to the Playstation 3 the need for a mascot kind of just disappeared and it’s very unlikely we might see a Jak 4 on the Playstation 3. But i am still hoping that something will come out for the Playstation 4. However you can buy the HD version of the trilogy for the PS3, which I highly suggest.

Ratchet and Clank

ratchet and clankI will admit out of this list these two are not as underrated as the others but still I think Sony could do so much more. Ratchet and Clank were introduced in 2002 for the Playstation 2 and was created by Insomniac games. Again Ratchet and Clank were anther one of Sony’s hopeful mascots which for some reason didn’t stick. Regardless of that fact Insomniac did make five games for just the PS2, two for the PSP and not to mention the PS3’s six games. The game play very similar to Jak and Daxter in which it’s a platforming adventure game with a third person shooter element. However unlike Jak and Daxter the game puts more emphasis on the arsenal of weapons from the wacky like a burping gun to the more devastating multiple rocket launchers. But the best part is with the ability to upgrade and level up your weapons. In my opinion the trilogy, Ratchet and Clank Future for the PS3 is one of the best the system has to offer. With an interesting story and excellent visuals the Future series is defiantly worth the price. However with all these games it seems these characters don’t get a lot of love. But it doesn’t seem like these characters are on the same level as a Mario or a Link like Nintendo has. Which I am hoping will change soon with the announcement of the Ratchet and Clank movie in 2015.

Kirby

kirby When you think Nintendo what are the first characters that come to mind? Characters like Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, or maybe Luigi. But very few think of Kirby. Kirby was first introduced in 1992 on the original Gameboy. Ever since then the pink wonder has floated into my heart with excellent games from the Gameboy to the Super Nintendo and beyond. He has even got a permanent spot in the Super Smash Bros. line up. So why do I think he is underrated? Because if you look at the amount of games that Kirby has is doesn’t stack up. It seems like Nintendo only makes one Kirby game for each system (with the exception of handhelds). But I think Kirby could have a triple A title that’s not a handheld game. My evidence Kirby: Return to Dreamland for the Wii an excellent game which introduced four player co-op to the series. I guess I kind of biased since I love side scrolling games but you have to admit Kirby games are fun. Let’s see how he does on the 3DS when Triple Deluxe comes out later this year.

Mega Man

megamanTalk about an underrated characters, if I was giving an order to these characters I would put Mega Man in the top three. Not because of the gamers, because we love Mega Man but because of Capcom the company that owns Mega Man. I really think Capcom underrates the Blue Bomber maybe thinking he is a relic of the past. My evidence is that fact that Capcom canceled every Mega Man game that was in development and has no plans to bring out any new Mega Man games. WHY!?! Mega Man was introduced in 1987 for the NES and revolutionized side scrolling games. Since then he has several games and several very popular spin offs like Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero. Plus, side scrolling games are starting to make a comeback. Games like New Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Heck! Even Rayman has an excellent side scrolling game. So why does Capcom underrate they own character? I don’t know, but I am hoping with his appearance in Super Smash Bros. coming this year that Capcom sees the light.

Bravoman

bravomanNever heard of Bravoman before don’t worry you are not alone. I didn’t even hear of him until just recently. Bravoman was a Japanese exclusive arcade game that was released by Namco in 1988. It was created as a parody of video games and Tokusatsu. Tokusatsu basically can be described as real life Sci-fi movies or shows that use lots of special effects similar to movies and shows like Godzilla, Masked Rider, or Ultraman. Sort of an “Airplane” of the video game world. Unfortunately the game never made it to the States in arcade form but you can still purchase the game on the Wii’s Shop Channel. So why do I think that Bravoman deserves a spot on this list even though no one has heard of him? Well, check out shiftylook.com this is a web comic site where you can not only read the adventures (or mis-adventures) of Bravoman. You can also watch the adventures in a beautifully done cartoon series. This cartoon series features the amazing voices of Dee Bradley Baker (Perry the Platypus, and The Clone Troopers from Star Wars Clone Wars) and Rob Paulsen (Yakko from Animaniacs and Pinky from Pinky and the Brain), two of my favorite voice actors. But what does this all have to do with video games? Check out the free Bravoman app and play it for yourself. I describe it as a cross between Mega Man and Temple Run. This mix reminds me of a very obscure Genesis game called Vectorman which is another great side-scroller. If they made a video game for the consoles that was along the same lines as Vectorman or the app it would make for a great game.

What about you Arcaders what are your thoughts? What about other characters not on the list? If you have any suggestions please leave a reply with your ideas below!

Direct Review 11/18/13

Hey Arcaders,

Ubernerd527 here! So I want to try to start a new post and here is how its going to works; Above I put the Nintendo Direct video so just in case you didn’t watch it you can. Then after you watch it then you can read my review of the video and then feel free to add you own feelings by replying to my post. So as you know I am a big Nintendo fan and I get really excited to see a new Nintendo Direct (We are going to call it ND for the rest of the post). I think it is one of the things that the other systems don’t do.

What better way to get people excited for the future then to show some new titless. In this video Nintendo introduced us to games like Hyrule Warriors (not the final title according to the video), Chibi Robo Photo Finder, NES Remix, Yoshi’s New Island and Dr. Luigi. What do I think about these new titles? Well, I think they are all pretty interesting especially Hyrule Warriors. I have never played games like Dynasty Warriors or anything like that but this game seems very interesting. Being able to attack an entire army with just my sword and a few weapons is amazing! Plus it’s pretty cool to see a second Zelda game on the WiiU so close after the first one. Its also interesting to note that Nintendo is trying something different with one of its more popular titles. As for Chibi Robo, I never really played the original so I can really get to excited for its 3DS debut. However some of the features of the game look pretty interesting like taking a picture of something in real life and it appearing in the game. NES Remix is another game that I think would be cool to have but I think my friend and owner of this blog raygunn1 would enjoy it more. Going on to Yoshi’s New Island I think this game looks interesting but I don’t know if I am eager to play it as much as the other games they announced. Finally there is Dr. Luigi which I will admit is a pretty cool idea that I think will improve on the original game. Now I will confess that I haven’t played any Dr. Mario games since the Gameboy game for the Original Gameboy! Even so I am kinda thrilled to see how this game plays out.

Now on to other announcements New DLC for Sonic Lost World, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze gets a new (or should I say old?) Character, a new Kirby game for the 3DS; Kirby Triple Deluxe, a free trial version of Bravely Default, a new game for Wii Sports Club, a new Character for Smash Bros. for the WiiU and 3DS, and finally more News about Mario Kart 8. Nintendo announced free DLC for Sonic Lost World that will start coming out for the WiiU version of the game. The first is a level designed like Yoshi’s Island. First of all when I heard this my mind exploded because this is only something that fans have been dreaming about since first playing Sonic. Now I have not played Sonic Lost World due to the low reviews that the game got but I may pick up this game if not for anything else but for the DLC. Donkey Kong is coming back and this time he is bring friends. In the new game for the WiiU Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Nintendo announced that Cranky Kong, who has long been a background character gets his time to shine. I can’t help but notice that Nintendo is also making a DuckTales reference with Cranky by giving him a cane that he can use as a pogo stick. But hey I love DuckTales and this will add a new element to the game so I am not complaining. Before we get to Kirby, a side note one of these days I want to do a post about Kirby because I think this is one of the most overlook Nintendo characters. Which is why I got eager to see a new Kirby game for the 3DS when it was originally announced a few months back. But now the game has a title, Kirby Triple Deluxe. The game looks great and the new additions don’t hurt either. Even the side games, Kirby Fighters and Dedede’s Drum Dash look like it will give the game a long shelf life.  Another cool looking game for the 3DS comes in the form of Bravely Default. I really think that Nintendo of America is trying to get this game to be popular here in the states. How you may ask? By letting you download a free demo of the game. But not just any game demo but a game that is a prolog to the main story. Where not only can you get items that carry over to the main game but other perks as well. I guess this is pretty cool I might actually download this game demo if not for anything but for a almost free game. Next is a new mini game you can download for the Wii sports Club. This game is Golf and I will have to say it is one of the most innovative uses for the touch pad controller that I have seen. Using the Wii-mote as the club you use the touch pad controller to see where your ball is for more accurate hitting. There is even a course that they based off of an old NES golf game which would be interesting to play. my only problem with it is why only give people a 24 hour trial of the game? Why couldn’t they have just made this game free to download like the previous game. This game is pretty much a game to show you what you can do with your WiiU much like Wii Sports was with the Wii. So why not let people download it for free? Or even do a special like they are doing with WiiFit were you have to get something to go with the game to get it for free. But lets move on to some news that I am always eager to see; A new Smash Bros. character. This time they introduce Rosalina and Luma. These two characters must becoming more and more popular because Nintendo seems to add them to a lot a there new games like Super Mario 3D World. I am not putting Rosalina down I have fond memories of  Super Mario Galaxy and it is one of my favorite games for the Wii. However I didn’t really think Rosalina was all that great of a character in the game cause you really didn’t learn anything about her other then Nintendo hinting that her and Peach my be sisters. But I am thrilled to see how she plays in Super Smash Bros after playing her in Super Mario 3D World. The video that they showed introducing Rosalina was kinda interesting and it made me wonder if this was the first part of a story mode that the game might have. Lastly we have Mario Kart 8 which is another game that I am interested in. Sonic All-stars Racing Transformed showed what a Kart game could be on the WiiU and it really thrills me to see what Nintendo can do on its own system.

Now I know that I left one announcement out from the top and I did that on purpose. Pokemon Bank is the one thing that I am most thrilled for. However, the reason I didn’t add it was because they didn’t really introduce anything new about it. Just like they said before you will be able to store up to 3,000 Pokemon on a cloud system and also transfer Pokemon from Pokemon Black, White, Black 2 and White 2. The only new piece was that if you download it you will be given a free Celebi. Which make me happy cause this Pokemon is one of my favorite legendary Pokemon. The 27th can’t come fast enough!

In Conclusion, this is the final ND for 2013 and I believe that Nintendo was trying very hard to get those last minute Christmas shoppers and convince them to buy a Nintendo system. Did it work? Yes and no. Yes, they showed off what is coming soon and for the Nintendo gamers out there I think it worked really well. No, because for those who aren’t Nintendo fans there wasn’t a lot of third party titles like Call of Duty or something else that they announced. Most of the games featured in this video were first party titles. If Nintendo wants to grab people who are more Sony or Microsoft fans they have to get some third pary titles. To finish this I want to add a grade for the video and I think I will give this an –A. Why? Because it gets people excited for the new year as well as show that the WiiU still have some punch into it. But if Nintendo wants to compete with other systems they will have to start getting some more third party titles.
